The Full Story
Mountain Resort has been a Lake Tahoe destination for four generations. But the glamping boom created both opportunity and challenge.
"Our traditional cabins were always booked," explains resort manager Karen Chen. "But we were turning away hundreds of reservations each season. Guests wanted something different - more connected to nature, more Instagram-worthy, more unique."
Traditional expansion wasn't viable in the timeline: - Cabin construction: 18-24 months per unit - Cost: $150,000-200,000 per cabin - Environmental impact: Significant site disruption - Design: Same look as existing inventory
Karen had seen container glamping concepts at hospitality conferences and wondered if they could work at Mountain Resort.
"I reached out to several container suppliers," she recalls. "DryBoxHub stood out because they understood hospitality. They weren't just selling metal boxes - they were helping us create experiences."
DryBoxHub recommended 20ft new containers in neutral colors that would complement the resort's aesthetic. The one-trip condition ensured pristine starting points for the design team's transformation.
Delivery presented unique challenges. The resort's mountain location meant navigating narrow roads, steep grades, and limited access windows. DryBoxHub's logistics team coordinated with the resort to schedule deliveries during optimal conditions, positioning each container precisely on its designated site.
The resort's design team created stunning interiors: - Floor-to-ceiling windows with mountain views - Queen beds with premium linens - Compact bathrooms with rainfall showers - Heated floors for cold mountain mornings - Private decks with outdoor seating - Fire pits and stargazing platforms
Each pod was positioned on scenic overlooks accessible by maintained trails - close enough for convenience, distant enough for privacy and natural immersion.
The launch exceeded all expectations: - Booking rates: 40% higher than traditional cabins - Average nightly rate: $450 (vs $280 for cabins) - Occupancy: 92% during peak season - Social media: Over 10,000 Instagram posts tagged
"The containers became our signature experience," Karen says. "Guests specifically request 'the pods.' They've become the most photographed feature on the property."
Financial results were equally impressive. The $180,000 investment (containers plus conversion) generated $420,000 in additional revenue the first full season alone.
Mountain Resort is now planning phase two: 15 additional container pods including larger 40ft units for families and a container-based spa facility.
